The Hebron girls hit the road for another Region 8-AAA contest tonight. The Lions travelled to the South Carolina border to take on Hart County, who was in second place in the region, vying for first. The girls had what might be their best defensive performance of the season in the 72-24 win. Hebron started off well enough leading 9-0 early, but Hart got on the board scoring the next five points to narrow the lead to 9-5. The Lions closed the first quarter with a 5-1 run to lead 14-6 at the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs hit a three on their first possession of the second quarter. It was 14-9 at this point. Then it wasn’t. Hebron went on a 20-2 run to close the second quarter taking a 34-11 lead into halftime. Hebron’s stifling defense remained as such in the second half. They weren’t picking Hart up in the full court but the Bulldogs couldn’t get into any of their halfcourt sets. Passes were often stolen and if they got a shot off, the Lions were cleaning the glass. Hart did not get many second chances on the offensive end. Hebron went on a 15-4 run to start the third quarter taking a 49-15 lead with 4:03 remaining in the period. The Lions coasted from there. Hebron’s defense held the Bulldogs 31 points below their average on the season. There was some offense tonight though. Aubrey Beckham had her biggest scoring output of the year as she poured in 24 points in only three quarters of play. She also had five assists, five steals and four rebounds. Kerra Butler had double-double numbers once again scoring 14 points and pulling down 11 boards. Nicky Daniel scored 13 points for Hebron while Kayla Lane put up six. Amiya Porter had five points, five assists and four rebounds while Aniya Moodie added four points. Jayden Watts and Emma Flowers chipped in three points each for the Lions who are now 22-0 overall, 7-0 in region play. Hart County falls to 15-7, 5-2. Hebron will next hit the floor on Friday when they travel to Monroe Area for another region matchup. Tipoff is 6:00 PM.

Hebron ventured outside of Region 8-AAA for an afternoon as the Southwest DeKalb Panthers came to Hebron Saturday afternoon. This is the third straight season that Hebron and Southwest DeKalb, out of Region 6-AAAA, have met in what’s becoming a cross classification rivalry featuring two of the most successful coaches in Georgia. Southwest DeKalb coach Kathy Richey-Walton has led the Panthers for over 20 years and has collected five state championships, most recently in 2016. The Lions won the first two meetings, 59-54 in 2021 at Hebron, and again last year at Southwest DeKalb, 71-50. Again, Hebron proved to be too much for the Panthers in this season’s meeting posting a 79-42 win today at home. For the second straight game, Hebron had four players score in double figures. Kerra Butler had like her millionth double-double of the season as she scored 21 points to go with 13 rebounds and five steals. Amiya Porter also scored 21 points and had seven assists and four boards in a solid all around performance. Aubrey Beckham scored 17 points to go with seven assists. Aniya Moodie put up 11 points and three steals. Nicky Daniel chipped in seven points and five rebounds for Hebron who ups its record to a perfect 21-0 on the season. Southwest Dekalb drops to 12-8. Hebron goes back to region play as they’ll travel way up I-85 on Tuesday to take on Hart County (15-6, 5-1). This will be a battle for first place in the region as Hebron currently leads 8-AAA with a 6-0 record while Hart is in second place. Hart’s sole region loss came at the hands of the Lions, 75-39, on January 13. Tipoff is Tuesday at Hart County at 6:00PM.
